I’m an energy geek so I’ve heard – and told – many stories about building science based decisions on projects: balanced ventilation, continuous insulation, air sealing, efficient water heating and distribution systems, and the like. These techniques are probably effective – but need verification. Part of being a high-performance builder, differentiating yourself from the competition, and delivering value at increased profitability is getting your homework graded. A third party that verifies and certifies your work gives your work credibility and certainty. Home Innovation Research Labs run an inexpensive, effective, and straightforward certification program based on the National Green Building Standard, the NGBS. Here’s a link to information about single family home certification.
There is a world of difference between “we build a high-performance house” and “this is a NBGS Gold certified home.”
